The house of Rosmer has been politically and religiously conservative for years, but change is in the air. His wife's suicide and the influence of Rebecca West have enticed out clergyman Rosmer's libertarian beliefs. The past, however, is not so easy to escape from.

Ibsen's 1886 drama explores the struggle between freedom and the cruelty of conscience in an age of political division.
