Chris Monks, who two years ago gave us his delightful The Mikado on a cricket pitch, returns with a new look Pirates of Penzance in which the inept band of plunderers appear as Mafiosi in dark glasses and tight buttoned up black suits. Monks manages to be excitingly innovative and at the same time to delight aficionados. As with the Mikado, this Pirates was created for the New Victoria Theatre, Newcastle under Lyme, where Monks’ musicals have been entertaining audiences for years.
