Rory Bremner’s translation of Offenbach’s opera, Orpheus In The Underworld, updates Orpheus’s journey to our media-savvy, celebrity-obsessed society.

Some of the catchiest tunes ever written carry the characters from one ridiculous scenario to the next, culminating in the famous Cancan.

Eurydice is married to Orpheus, a musician who, in her opinion, plays the violin badly. Fed up with her husband, she falls for the devious Pluto and is soon caught up in a hellish situation. Meanwhile, bored to tears and spying an interesting situation unfolding, Public Opinion muscles in to ‘help’ Orpheus rescue his wife. But does she want to be rescued?

Bremner, who translates Orpheus In The Underworld, is better known as a writer, performer and impressionist than for his translating virtuosity, though he has previously worked on productions of Brecht’s A Respectable Wedding and operas Carmen and Der Silbersee. His TV series include the award-winning Bremner, Bird And Fortune.
