Hailing a new ENO Monteverdi cycle produced in association with the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston, Chinese-born director Chen Shi-Zheng makes his UK opera house debut with a spellbinding presentation of Orfeo. In an exhilarating collaboration, Chen Shi-Zheng is accompanied by some of the country’s leading early music specialists, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, John Mark Ainsley in the title role and the conductor Laurence Cummings. A marriage of Greek myth and Asian aesthetics, Chen’s Orfeo unites Monteverdi’s delicately nuanced music with a timeless re-telling of this beautiful tragedy.
