Dedicated to bridging the gap between classical ballet and modern dance, NDT has forged a reputation as one of the most innovative and distinct dance groups in Europe. NDT’s premiere Company will perform a full-length ballet by Jirí Kylián, founder of NDT and one of the most outstanding artists of the 20th Century. Kylián’s choreography is part of the repertoire of many of the best dance companies in the world, but to see his NDT1 perform his work is a truly magical experience. One of a Kind is an exquisite interplay between lighting, set, music and dance. On a starkly beautiful set by Japanese architect Atsushi Kitagawara, 24 dancers move with eerily light steps which suddenly transform into lightning flashes and stupendous pas de deux. Their forte is mixing strength and technical precision with a fascinating use of contemporary movement. A cellist accompanies the dancers live onstage, with Brett Dean’s original score cleverly infused with extracts of music by Benjamin Britten, John Cage and Chiel Meijering.
