Natalie Casey and Jason Hughes star in Sarah Ruhl’s UK Theatre Award-winning play about a doctor whose new invention to treat female hysteria has an unexpectedly pleasurable effect.

A provocative, touching and entertaining story about sex and intimacy, IN THE NEXT ROOM or the vibrator play is set in late 19th century New York during a time of great innovation and social change, and follows Dr Givings as he discovers that his new electrical device has other benefits after a patient emerges from his first session glowing and keen to return.

Directed by Laurence Boswell, the cast includes Casey (Abigail’s Party), Hughes (This Life), Edward Bennett (UK tour of One Man, Two Guvnors), Flora Montgomery (RSC’s The Heart Of Robin Hood), Sarah Woodward (Jumpy) Madeline Appiah and Owen Oakeshott.

IN THE NEXT ROOM or the vibrator play arrives at the St James theatre following a successful run at the Theatre Royal Bath’s Ustinov Studio.
