An upper class French woman Mrs Lemarchand becomes obsessed with Hilda, the nanny she hires to care for her children. Intent on improving the quality of Hilda’s life, she makes gifts of clothes and literature, and discusses social issues as if they were equals.

Power and manipulation dominate this tale which was awarded the Grand Prix de la Critique when it was premiered in Paris.
