When Kayleen and Doug meet in the nurse’s office of their elementary school aged 8, she can’t stop being sick and he’s pedalled his bike off the roof. Over the course of the next 30 years an intensely unusual love story develops that is as delicate and raw as its protagonists.

Passionate, infuriating, heartwarming and heartbreaking; their own destructiveness continues to force them apart, only to be drawn together again. And again.

The European Première of Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph’s hilarious and dark tale, Gruesome Playground Injuries races back and forth in time through the lives of two unique characters and the twisted relationship that defines them.

Playwright Joseph is the multi-award-winning writer of Bengal Tiger At The Baghdad Zoo. Gruesome Playground Injuries is directed by Justin Audibert (Company Along The Mile at the Arcola, The Tempest and Future Regrets for the RSC), the recipient of this year’s Leverhulme Bursary.

Gruesome Playground Injuries stars award-winning actress Mariah Gale (Three Sisters at the Young Vic theatre, Romeo And Juliet and Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company) and Felix Scott (The Under Room, Lyric Hammersmith; Dr Faustus, Shakespeare’s Globe; The Man Who Had All The Luck, Donmar Warehouse).
