The King’s Head opens 2012 with a double bill of plays by award-winning playwright and director Murray Watts.

First Light takes a stark look at trust as innocence and scandal collide in the life of grief stricken house-master, Tom. Despair at the loss of his wife is smothering his characteristic optimism and good humour, when, at 3am on his last night as house-master at a boarding school, there is a knock at the door and schoolgirl Merry walks into his living room.

Mr Darwin’s Tree was commissioned for the bicentenary of Charles Darwin’s birth and charts his extraordinary life, from the Beagle voyage, to the world-shattering publication of the Origin of Species. The play deals with science, faith and doubt in the context of an enduring love story.

Though each play is a distinct work they share common themes of love, faith and doubt.
