Cruel is a dance piece of love, lust, obsession and rejection.

Witness Brazil’s leading contemporary dance company explore the darker aspects of relationships in this exhilarating ensemble piece.

Enter Cruel’s dream-like world where sensual modern dance is combined with lavish costumes, evocative music and atmospheric lighting in Colker’s distinctive signature style.

Set to an eclectic soundtrack fusing classical pieces from Vivaldi, Dvorak and Chopin with contemporary drum and bass elements, this sumptuous production brings Laurence Olivier Award-winning choreographer Deborah Colker back to the Barbican.

Cruel’s acclaimed choreographer Colker created Brazil’s leading contemporary dance company Companhia de Dança Deborah Colker in Rio de Janeiro in 1994. Since then, the company has been hard at work innovating startling new dance languages, scenic elements and mixing dance technique with contemporary, everyday themes in performances staged all over the world.
