Cavalli developed a lush, unusual sound world for the strange and sexy story of Erismena. The English Touring Opera’s production will use a 17th-century English translation, which is at once a dissection of forbidden loves and a powerful discourse on hope. Written for the permissive, promiscuous carnival-time Venice of the 1650s, this exquisite drama combines broad comedy and delicate poetry.
