The 300th birthday of Thomas Arne, the composer of Rule Brittania, is celebrated with this production of one of his biggest successes.

Artaxerxes received its premiere in Covent Garden in 1762 and remained a favourite until the 1830s.

Set in ancient Persia, the plot surrounds the young prince Artaxerxes who supports his innocent friend Arbaces, who has been found guilty and condemned to death by the real murderer, his own father.
