Matt Smith makes his musical theatre debut as Patrick Bateman in the new musical stage adaptation of American Psycho.

Best known as the time-travelling title character in Doctor Who, Smith’s previous theatre credits include The History Boys, That Face and Swimming With Sharks. He is joined in the production by former X Factor contestant Lucie Jones, Jonathan Bailey, who recently starred in the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of Othello, and Susannah Fielding, whose recent credits include the Michael Grandage Company production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ cult novel, the musical charts the story of Bateman, a Manhattan businessman who wears designer clothers, eats at expensive restaurants and parties at the hottest clubs. But, in private, he indulges in another kind of transgression that leads the people around him to disappear.

A co-production with Headlong and the Almeida theatre, American Psycho is directed by the venue’s new Artsitic Director Rupert Goold with music by Spring Awakening’s Duncan Sheik and a book by writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
