Patrick Ness’ best-selling and piercing novel A Monster Calls is brought to The Old Vic stage in this powerful new adaptation by visionary director Sally Cookson.

A Monster Calls centres on thirteen-year-old Conor and his mum, who seem to have managed just fine since his dad moved to America.

But when his mum falls very sick, and doesn’t seem to be getting any better, things take a turn for a worse. Conor’s grandmother won’t stop interfering and the kids at school won’t look him in the eye. Then, one night, at seven minutes past midnight, Conor is woken by something at his window.

A monster has come walking – and it’s come to tell Conor tales from when it walked before. A Monster Calls challenges Conor to tell his own story and face his deepest fears in a poignant and piercing tale, exploding onto stage in Cookson’s unique staging. This adaptation is suitable for ages 10+.

Sally Cookson’s previous theatre credits include The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe (Elliot & Harper Productions and West Yorkshire Playhouse), Jane Eyre and Peter Pan (National Theatre, both co-productions with Bristol Old Vic). She is an associate artist at Bristol Old Vic, where A Monster Calls will run from 31 May 2018–16 June 2018 before transferring to The Old Vic.

On publication, the novel of A Monster Calls became a bestseller with children and adults alike with its dazzling insight into love, loss and healing. It garnered huge critical acclaim, including an unprecedented double win of the Carnegie and Greenaway Medals for outstanding children’s literature and illustration.
