Due to popular demand, Matthew Warchus’ critically-acclaimed production of Charles Dickens’ festive classic A Christmas Carol will return to The Old Vic this December.
The joyous adaptation by Harry Potter And The Cursed Child writer, Jack Thorne, wowed audiences with the heart-warming tale full of merry music and yuletide cheer.
A Christmas Carol will transport you to a wintry Christmas Eve to witness four ghosts visiting a hard-hearted miser named Ebenezer Scrooge. The ghosts take Scrooge on a journey to worlds past, present and future. But having seen the ramifications of his lonely existence, will he be able to save himself from the results of a lifetime of fear and selfishness?
Matthew and Jack’s adaptation originally starred Rhys Ifans when it received a flurry of stars during its 2017/2018 run, and we expect this year’s production – with brilliant comic actor Stephen Tompkinson playing Scrooge – to be just as adored.
Matthew is a prolific director whose theatre credits include the Olivier Award-winning Groundhog Day musical, Matilda The Musical, and Tony Award-winning God Of Carnage. Along with Hamilton, Matilda The Musical holds the record for most Olivier Awards for a musical. It has seven including the award for Best New Musical. Matthew was appointed Artistic Director of the Old Vic in 2015.
In addition to Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, Jack’s theatre credits include Woyzeck, Let The Right One In, and Punchdrunk’s The Borough.
Since its publication in 1843, A Christmas Carol has become one of the world’s most beloved Christmas stories. In addition to many stage adaptions, there have been numerous film adaptations loved by all. Some of the most famous screen adaptations include Scrooge, starring Alastair Sim; Scrooged, starring Bill Murray; and The Muppet Christmas Carol which starred Michael Caine.
So come and indulge in a deluge of mince pies, music and merriment at The Old Vic, in a unique show which is guaranteed to warm the hearts of all those aged 8+.
