West Side Story returns to Sadler’s

Published 13 November 2012

Following its 15th anniversary season announcement last month, Sadler’s Wells has confirmed further productions for 2013 including the return of hit production West Side Story and ZooNation’s Some Like It Hip Hop.

West Side Story, which is famously based on the classic story Romeo And Juliet, will play at the acclaimed dance venue from 7 August to 22 September. Last seen at the venue in 2008 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s legendary musical, the production received rave reviews, with The Observer calling it “A thrilling, hurtling triumph”.

Innovative dance company ZooNation’s Some Like It Hip Hop was similarly critically revered when it first opened in 2011, with the production subsequently nominated for two Olivier Awards earlier this year and returning to London for its second run in September.

Returning to the Peacock theatre, the home of its world premiere and Sadler’s Wells’ West End home, Kate Prince’s hit will play from 3 May to 30 June. With a nod to Billy Wider’s Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, the show combines the dance company’s trademark mix of hip-hop, comedy and physical theatre.

Other highlights in the newly announced season include Flamenco Festival London (15-27 March), the 10th anniversary of Breakin’ Convention (4-6 May), the venue’s annual international festival of hip-hop dance theatre and culture, and the return of the popular Family Weekend (29-30 March).
