Martin McDonagh’s Royal Court and West End hit Hangmen is to be screened in cinemas in the UK and across the world from 3 March as part of National Theatre Live.
The five-star hit, described by the Daily Telegraph as “The best new play of the year”, tells the story of Harry, a local celebrity in Oldham on account of him being the second-best hangman in England. On the day hanging is abolished his small pub is filled with regulars and reporters eager to hear his reaction. But among the crowds his old assistant Syd and the peculiar Mooney harbour very different motives.

Penned by The Lieutenant Of Inishmore and In Bruges writer McDonagh, the dark comedy was first seen at the Royal Court, receiving such critical and public success that it transferred to the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre.
The show stars The Walking Dead’s David Morrissey as Harry, with Peaky Blinders star and Ghost Stories creator Andy Nyman as Syd and Jerusalem’s Johnny Flynn as Mooney.
Venues for the live broadcasts on 3 March and subsequent screenings are yet to be confirmed. The information will be released on the NT Live website.
