Unicorn seeks birthday twins

First Published 7 July 2015, Last Updated 7 July 2015

To celebrate a decade of acclaimed theatre, the much-loved Unicorn Theatre is searching for 10-year-olds who share its birthday to join them for a red carpet anniversary celebration.

Epitomising its long-term reputation for putting young people at its heart, the theatre will mark its 10th anniversary with a kid’s only party.

Children who turn 10 on 1 December 2015 can apply to attend alongside their friends and enjoy a special performance of Baddies: The Musical, a new production featuring a line-up of fairytales’ most villainous characters.

Speaking about its milestone birthday, the Unicorn’s Artistic Director Purni Morell described herself as “hugely proud” to have been at the helm for three years of its history, commenting: “Over the past three years, our biggest successes have been where we’ve pushed form, where artists have challenged themselves to push boundaries, and where we’ve surprised adults and children alike with what theatre for young audiences can be.”

The past 10 years have seen the theatre create a programme of quality, thought-provoking and entertaining theatre for young people, cementing Morell’s belief that: “At its best, nothing should stop children’s theatre standing alongside the very best theatre that’s made anywhere.” It’s a sentiment shared by actor and Unicorn ambassador Jude Law, who praised the venue, saying: “The Unicorn keeps going from strength to strength.”

Fans of the London Bridge venue will be able to explore the building further in two events coming up over the summer. Over the August bank holiday weekend the theatre will host two days of free events, workshops and shows including plate spinning, interactive shows and the chance to add your touch to the theatre’s temporary mural.

The following month will see the venue join dozens of iconic buildings across the capital in taking part in Open House, allowing the public to take a guided tour including the chance to attend one of two tours led by Keith Williams, the theatre’s architect, on 19 September.

For full details of events taking place in the theatre’s 10th anniversary year, visit the Unicorn Theatre’s website or, to apply for tickets to the 1 December party, email your name, contact details and proof of age to iamten@unicorntheatre.com
