The Unicorn theatre will celebrate the 200th birthday of the Brothers Grimm’s classic collection of fairytales, Household And Children’s Tales, with a season of work inspired by the master storytellers in February.
Into The Grimm Forest will bring together four international companies each with a distinctive style and a shared passion for folklore and storytelling theatre.
The season opens with a retelling of The Three Snake Leaves by renowned British troupe The Company of Storytellers on 4 February. The production, suitable for children over 14, takes a look at how grown-up myths can shed light on contemporary life.
Next up is Peter Chand’s Grimms’ Sheesha, which will remind audiences just how international our folklore tradition really is by staging some South Asian stories that have crossed continents to make it into our European repertoire. The story is suitable for children aged eight and above and plays from 7 to 12 February.
Ben Haggerty will explore the darker side of Grimms’s fairytales in Grim Grimms. With the help of Sherry Robinson’s cello he’ll take children on a gruesome, humorous and magical journey through a fairytale forest from 14 to 19 February.
Sally Pomme Clayton’s A Year In The Forest, which runs from 21 to 26 February features a selection of classic Grimm tales brought to life with music for children aged five and above. The Unicorn is also taking part in the London Children’s Bookswap and will be hosting a free event in the foyer just before A Year In The Forest on 25 February.
