Jonathan Pryce will be joined by his daughter when he steps onto Shakespeare’s Globe’s stage to star in The Merchant Of Venice this summer.
Recent RADA graduate Phoebe, the youngest of Pryce’s children with actress Kate Fahy, will play Jessica, the daughter of her father’s character, the moneylender Shylock, in Shakespeare’s classic drama.
While Pryce senior boast stage awards on both sides of the Atlantic, Pryce junior is just making her professional stage debut, appearing in Charlie’s Dark Angel at the Drayton Arms Theatre.
The Pryces will be joined at the iconic venue by Daniel Lapaine, who returns to the London stage to play Bassanio following last year’s Other Desert Cities at the Old Vic, Rachel Pickup (Portia) and Dominic Mafham (Antonio).
Playing from 23 April to 7 June, The Merchant Of Venice is the tale of Jewish moneylender Shylock who is hated by his Christian peers. When he finds himself in a position of power over just such a hater, he has the opportunity to exact a hideous revenge by claiming his pound of flesh. Meanwhile wealthy heiress Portia is quite literally playing games with her potential suitors.
The full cast for the production, which sees Pryce make his debut at Shakespeare’s Globe, also includes Stefan Adegbola, Michael Bertenshaw, Philip Cox, Scott Karim, Ben Lamb, Christopher Logan, Brian Martin, Dorothea Myer-Bennett, Regé-Jean Page and David Sturzaker.
Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole’s final season at the helm of the Globe, inspired by the theme ‘Justice and Mercy’, also features productions of Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet, As You Like It, King John, Measure For Measure, Richard II, Richard III, Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth, alongside Helen Edmundson’s The Heresy Of Love, Rory Mullarkey’s new adaptation of The Oresteia and Jessica Swale’s new play Nell Gwynn.
