Shawshank closes doors

Published 3 November 2009

The stage adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption is to hold its final performance at the Wyndham’s theatre on 29 November. It had been booking until 14 February.

Based on the 1982 novella by Stephen King, which was subsequently turned into a film in 1994, The Shawshank Redemption is a prison-set drama which centres on convicted murderer Andy Dufresne. Forced to endure a spirit-crushing routine in the notorious Shawshank prison, Andy must summon an inner courage to ensure that he never gives up hope.

Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns’s play, which stars Kevin Anderson and Reg E Cathey as the principal duo, originated at the Gaiety theatre, Dublin before transferring to London on 4 September. A UK tour is now planned for 2010 before the production returns to Dublin.

No further productions have been scheduled for the Wyndham’s theatre.
