Following the success of Sovremennik Theatre Company’s season last year, the Noël Coward theatre will now welcome another Moscow-based company, as Vakhtangov Theatre arrives in the West End with its modern interpretation of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya.

Winner of the Best Production Award at Russia’s Golden Mask Awards, Uncle Vanya will play at the venue from 5 to 10 November.

Director Rimas Tuminas, who is well known for his productions in Russia and Europe, has recreated Chekhov’s masterpiece, transforming the familiar aspects of the play into a battlefield of passions, broken illusions and unrealised hopes.

Producer Oksana Nemchuk hopes that the arrival of the play will mean a promising future for Russian productions in the West End, commenting: “I hope this return to the Noël Coward will mark the beginning of a regular Russian theatre season in London.”

Uncle Vanya will arrive at the Noël Coward theatre later in the year, following Noël Coward’s Hay Fever and Elevator Repair Service’s production of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Gatz. The production will be performed in Russian with English surtitles.
