Royal Court holds playwriting workshop for kids

As part of the Royal Court Theatre’s Young Writers Festival, the much-lauded venue is holding a free playwriting workshop for children next month.

Taking place on 17 March, the two hour workshop will be led by Constellations and Wanderlust playwright Nick Payne. Suitable for children aged eight to 11 years old, the interactive and fun workshop will help young writers create a short story to be performed by professional actors at the end of the afternoon.

All children need to bring is lots of imagination and plenty of stories whizzing around their heads. The workshop is free but ticketed so parents should contact the Royal Court by calling 020 7565 5000 to book places.

The Young Writers Festival has been running at the Sloane Square venue since 1973 and has launched the career of numerous young playwrights. As well as the normal array of staged readings of plays submitted by writers aged 25 and younger last spring, for the first year ever the festival will also be displaying work by children from the age of eight.

Royal Court playwrights Debbie Tucker Green, EV Crow and Payne worked with 75 young people from 18 schools to create plays for a special day of performances entitled Saturday Shorts which will also take place on 17 March.

Seven short plays from children aged eight to 11 years old and three plays from writers aged 12 to 15 years old will be performed, with titles ranging from the magical sounding The Flying Boy to the comical Proud To Be Geeky.
