Michael Frayn’s hugely successful comedy Noises Off is to be revived at the Old Vic this Christmas, in a production directed by Lindsay Posner.
The play within a play, which won the Olivier Award for Comedy of the Year when it was first staged in 1982, will run at the Old Vic from 3 December.
Frayn’s comedy portrays the goings on in an amateur touring production of sex comedy Nothing On as it tours around the country, following the explosive relationships that lead to off-stage shenanigans and on-stage bedlam.
After premiering to appreciative reviews at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1982, Noises Off transferred to the Savoy theatre, where it ran until 1987.
Director Posner’s most recent London productions include this summer’s revival of Butley at the Duchess theatre, which starred Dominc West, the Olivier-nominated 2010 production of An Ideal Husband at the Vaudeville theatre and the Almeida theatre production of thriller House Of Games.
Casting for Noises Off is yet to be announced.
Noises Off comes to the Old Vic following the theatre’s autumn run of The Playboy Of The Western World, JM Synge’s Ireland-set comic masterpiece, which opens later this month.
