New Es Devlin attraction to a-maze public

First Published 16 September 2016, Last Updated 21 September 2016

Nationally renowned and multi Olivier Award-winning stage designer Es Devlin is to launch her first solo project, Mirror Maze, open to the public from next week.

Available from 21 to 25 September at Copeland Park in Peckham, the innovative design will open next week as the premiere of a series of “hero” projects in The Fifth Sense, an initiative by i-D in partnership with Chanel, which celebrates women across the creative industries.

Es, whose previous designs include the closing ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics, along with work for Adele, U2, Kanye West and the Olivier Awards, and sets at the Royal Opera House, The Barbican and the Donmar Warehouse, will exhibit the design for five days, conjuring a complex imagined world, played out over four rooms.

The design was created in response to fragrance and the way it can recall memories, times and places unsolicited. The rooms include large-scale projection which visitors can physically walk through, an elaborate maze of mirrored walls, and immersive graphics combined with digital projection to invoke a sensation of physically falling, as well as a scent exclusively imagined by Olivier Polge, Chanel’s in-house perfumer, for the installation.

The installation will also be accompanied by two online films. Mirror Maze by Es Devlin is commissioned by The Fifth Sense, a partnership between CHANEL and i-D; for more information, please visit The Fifth Sense’s website
