Matilda musical stages third relaxed show

Published 9 February 2016

Matilda The Musical is to stage its third relaxed performance, aimed at the families of theatregoers with autism and learning disabilities, on Sunday 12 June at London’s Cambridge Theatre.

The decision follows the success of the hit show’s previous two relaxed performances in 2014 and 2015.

The Royal Shakespeare Company, which presents the musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, will work closely with The National Autistic Society and Mousetrap Theatre Projects to create a performance tailored to its audience’s specific needs.

Among the alterations due to be made for the 15:00 show  are softened lighting and sound, designated chill out areas, an altered approach to noise and movement around the auditorium, and audio-description.

Speaking about the event, Catherine Mallyon, Executive Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, said: “We hope that everyone feels welcome at our theatres and our productions.  Following the success of our first two relaxed performances of Matilda The Musical, we are so pleased to offer a third to people with autism and learning disabilities and their families, recognising that it isn’t always easy to all come out together. The National Autistic Society and Mousetrap Theatre Projects have provided valuable support and I am delighted that relaxed performances are now a regular feature of our programme.”

The record-breaking, Olivier Award-winning Matilda The Musical tells the story of a young girl who, ignored by her parents and tormented by her headmistress, finds solace in stories and takes retribution into her own hands, before discovering a very special power.

Tickets for the relaxed performance are available at a reduced rate of £25 and £10, and can be booked through the RSC’s ticket hotline 01789 403493.
