Matilda The Musical announces summer relaxed performance

By Robin Johnson Published 26 March 2019

Following the sold-out success of the previous programme, Matilda The Musical has announced a sixth relaxed performance at the Cambridge Theatre.

The Royal Shakespeare Company will present the relaxed performance at 3pm on Sunday 9 June. The performance will offer a relaxed environment for everyone, adapting elements of the production to reduce anxiety or stress, and softening the impact of lighting and sound levels.

Audience etiquette will also be relaxed at the performance, with all theatregoers given the freedom to make noise and move about the auditorium according to their needs. Designated ‘chill-out’ areas will also be provided outside the auditorium, with soft seating and activities available for those seeking to take a break. All theatre staff, crew and company members also receive specialist training in advance of the show to anticipate a wider range of different audience needs.

The National Autistic Society and Mousetrap Theatre Projects will work closely with the RSC to deliver the performance, offering full access to the theatre for people with autism and learning disabilities and their families. The RSC has been pioneering such performances since 2013.

Tickets for the relaxed performance are available through the RSC Ticket Hotline (01789 331111) or in person at the Cambridge Theatre box office.

Matilda The Musical is the internationally acclaimed musical written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. The show is based on Roald Dahl’s story of Matilda, a talented and fiercely intelligent child who uses her abilities to teach the adults in her life an important lesson.
