Marin Mazzie, currently playing The Lady of the Lake in the Broadway production of Monty Python’s Spamalot, will swap with her West End counterpart, Hannah Waddingham, in January to become London’s new Lady.
Three-times Tony nominee Mazzie made her London debut in Kiss Me Kate at the Victoria Palace in 2001, receiving a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. In addition to Monty Python’s Spamalot, her Broadway credits include Kiss Me Kate, Ragtime, Passion, Man Of La Mancha, Into The Woods, Kismet and The Vagina Monologues.
On 14 January, Mazzie takes over from Waddingham, who was Laurence Olivier Award nominated for originating the role of The Lady of the Lake in the West End. Waddingham steps into Mazzie’s shoes to make her Broadway debut in the New York production on 17 January.
Meanwhile, over in Sweden, the first auditions have taken place for a new reality show on Swedish television, West End Story, which aims to discover a new Lady of the Lake to perform in the London production sometime in 2008.
Written by original Python Eric Idle and his long-time collaborator John Du Prez, Monty Python’s Spamalot is based on the film Monty Python And The Holy Grail and tells the story of King Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail. Accompanied by a bunch of hapless knights, King Arthur’s journey brings him face to face with rude Frenchmen, killer rabbits and the Knights of Ni.
Currently in the show at the Palace theatre are Peter Davison as King Arthur, Bill Ward as Sir Lancelot, plus Robert Hands, Steven Kynman, Graham MacDuff, Andrew Spillett and Tony Timberlake. Monty Python’s Spamalot celebrates a year in the West End on 17 October.
