Normally if you see a seagull in London, some wise soul will make a remark about it being a sign of impending stormy weather, the usually beach bothering bird having flapped his way inland to avoid the nastiness making its airborne way from the coast.
Unless lovers of old wives’ tales are predicting a washout summer, this will not be the case in Regent’s Park this June and July where not just a seagull but The Seagull will entirely avoid the seaside and take up residence.
Chekhov’s classic tale of artistic temperaments being strained behind the scenes of an avant-garde play’s staging will entertain audiences at the Open Air Theatre during the early summer, following current magical hit Peter Pan.
Its stars, who include Olivier Award-winning actress Janie Dee, Poldark’s Sabrina Bartlett and Evening Standard Theatre Award winner Matthew Tennyson, are already knee deep in rehearsals for the new version created by Invincible playwright Torben Betts and directed by Matthew Dunster.
