In rehearsal: The Entertainer

Whoever knew that rehearsing for a play called “The Entertainer” could be so, well… entertaining?

Well, Kenneth Branagh, for one. From the look of our snapshots of rehearsals for the upcoming final leg of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s acclaimed season at the Garrick Theatre, he appears to be relishing the prospect of tackling a role made famous by Laurence Olivier himself: the vaudeville performer Archie Rice.

So what can we expect from the show based on our peek into rehearsals? Indispensable newspapers, plenty of cigarettes, an ever-present neck towel that would make Douglas Adams proud, and no shortage of showmanship, it seems. Telling the tale of a man at the depths of his career – and marriage – The Entertainer opens on 20 August, with rehearsals underway and cast members Branagh, Phil Dunster and Gawn Grainger, among others, set to star.
