In rehearsal: Saint Joan

Published 1 December 2016

If you’re looking for a brilliant leading lady to play a powerful historical figure, Gemma Arterton is your woman.

Having received an Olivier Award nomination for her acclaimed portrayal of Nell Gwynn, Gemma is now taking on the central role in Bernard Shaw’s seminal play Saint Joan, playing at the Donmar Warehouse from 9 December – and from the look of these rehearsal shots, it’s a challenge she’s throwing herself into with relish.

The show centres on the eponymous Joan: daughter, farm girl, visionary, patriot, king-whisperer, soldier, leader, victor, icon, radical, witch, heretic, saint, martyr, woman.

With direction from Artistic Director Josie Rourke, other casting includes Matt Bardock as Robert De Baudricourt and D’Estivet, Richard Cant as De Stogumber, Hadley Fraser as Dunois and Elliot Levey as Cauchon.

Saint Joan will also be broadcast via NT Live in cinemas around the world, directly from the Donmar Warehouse, on Thursday 16 February 2017.

To book your tickets, visit the venue’s website.
