In rehearsal: Groundhog Day

The Old Vic’s Groundhog Day has been one of most hotly anticipated shows of the year. Based on the hit 1993 film about a man forced to relive the same day again and again, the show unites original screenwriter Danny Rubin and the team behind Olivier Award-winning sensation Matilda The Musical.

Judging by these photos, we have a lot to be excited about. The snapshots from the rehearsal room leave us in no doubt that this is going to be a dynamic show, not least because of the highly energetic choreography, with many cast members caught mid-air. And are those tap shoes we can see?
Even more intriguing are the designs director Matthew Warchus is seen pouring over, with the intricate marks on the floor indicating a complex and (hopefully!) moving set.

Perhaps most exciting is the sense of a creative process at work: shots of writer Danny Rubin smiling at (what we presume is) the script on his laptop, Tim Minchin singing through a piece with the rehearsal pianist and Rubin and Warchus laughing at the action in front of them.

Groundhog Day promises to be a captivating original musical and we just can’t wait.

But have we said that already?

Groundhog Day runs at the Old Vic from 15 July to 17 September. You can buy tickets through us here.
