Gielgud to Enjoy Bennett for longer

Christopher Luscombe’s production of Alan Bennett’s Enjoy has extended its run at the Gielgud theatre for two weeks until 16 May.

Enjoy, which famously flopped when it premiered in 1980, was revived by director Luscombe at Theatre Royal Bath last year and the production toured the UK before arriving at the Gielgud on 27 January.

The play stars Alison Steadman and David Troughton as Connie and Wilf, an aging couple living in Leeds in one of the city’s last back-to-back houses, which is soon to be demolished to make way for flats. Before the couple are re-housed, a sociologist is sent to observe them in their home, prompting a decidedly atypical turn of events.

Leeds-born playwright Bennett has been a household name since his days on satirical show Beyond The Fringe. His many plays include Habeas Corpus, Forty Years On, Single Spies, The Madness Of George III, Talking Heads and The Lady In The Van.

The cast of Enjoy also includes Carol Macready, Josie Walker and Richard Glaves.
