Fountain in Waterloo East theatre’s Departure Lounge

Hollyoaks star Chris Fountain and Hairspray duo Verity Rushworth and Liam Tamne are to appear in the new musical Departure Lounge at the brand new Waterloo East theatre from 28 September.

Douglas Irvine’s musical comedy follows the reminiscences of a group of 18-year-olds delayed at Malaga airport after a post-exams holiday. Individual memories of the trip seem to be at odds, particularly when it comes to romance.

Fountain is best known for playing Justin in the teen soap Hollyoaks, following which he displayed his ice-skating skills on ITV programme Dancing On Ice. His television credits also include Where The Heart Is, The Royal and the latest series of Five Days, while his stage work includes appearances in Les Misérables and Oliver!

Rushworth and Tamne starred on stage together in the recent production of Hairspray at the Shaftesbury theatre, playing Penny Pingleton and Link Larkin respectively. Rushworth was previously well known for her 10-year stint as Donna in Emmerdale.

The trio are joined in Departure Lounge by London theatre regulars Harry Hepple and Steven Webb. Hepple has been seen in Burnt By The Sun at the National Theatre, I Caught Crabs In Walberswick at the Bush theatre and Alaska at the Royal Court, while Webb’s credits include The History Boys at the National Theatre, The Trestle At Pope Lick Creek at Southwark Playhouse and Public Property at the Trafalgar Studios.

Departure Lounge, which plays to 31 October, is the first musical outing of Waterloo East theatre, a new venue which opens its doors on 2 September. Its first season also includes one-person shows Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer, Sunset Bitch and Being Sellars.
