The highly-acclaimed production of Fiddler On The Roof will end its run at the Savoy theatre on 16 February after nine months at the venue. The production, which stars Henry Goodman in the lead role, proved to be so popular that it twice extended its originally limited season. It will be replaced, in May, by Take That musical Never Forget.
The current production of Fiddler On The Roof originated at the Sheffield Crucible, where it garnered so much critical and public acclaim that a transfer to London seemed inevitable. Its reception in London was also positive, with the production being nominated for the Ned Sherrin Award for Best Musical at the 2007 Evening Standard Awards.
Goodman leads the cast as Tevye, an old-fashioned father of a Jewish family in Tsarist Russia. He wants to see his daughters married in the traditional Jewish way. They have ideas of their own.
Fiddler On The Roof first opened on Broadway in 1964, winning nine Tony awards and going on to become one of the best loved film musicals ever. Its score includes memorable songs such as Tradition, Matchmaker and If I Were A Rich Man. em>MA
