Family workshops at Barbican

First Published 15 September 2008, Last Updated 15 September 2008

Merce Cunningham Dance Company, which performs at the Barbican from 30 September to 4 October, is offering a series of family events to complement its programme of work and give young people an insight into the company’s choreography.

The Merce Cunningham Dance Company Family Movement Workshop invites young people to come and explore the basic choreographic principles used by the company and create short dances using the ideas they have learnt. No prior dance experience is required.

Two sessions will be held in the Barbican Pit on 4 October. The first, at 12:30, is aimed at 8-10 year-olds, while the second, at 15:15, is for 11-16 year-olds. Tickets cost £5.

Also on 4 October at 14:00 the company will be taking part in Open Rehearsal by allowing members of the public to see dancers rehearsing for their evening performance. Attendance is free but places must be reserved by calling the box office on 0845 120 7500.

Open Rehearsal is a Mayor of London initiative in which arts venues across the capital allow backstage access to members of the public. This year, backstage tours, open rehearsals and workshops are taking place at venues including the National Theatre, the Royal Opera House and the BBC. Most of the events are held on the weekend of 26-28 September.

Merce Cunningham Dance Company will perform two programmes of work at the Barbican from 30 September to 4 October, which both include Cunningham’s latest work Xover.
