Curious Incident extends Gielgud run

Published 17 February 2016

Multi Olivier Award-winning hit The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time has extended its London run at the Gielgud Theatre to 29 October.

More than 140,000 tickets have gone on sale for the newly extended run of the National Theatre’s hugely successful drama based on Mark Haddon’s best-selling book about a 15-year-old autistic teenager who employs his extraordinary brain to solve the mystery of who killed his neighbour’s dog.

Adapted by playwright Simon Stephens, Curious Incident made its world premiere in 2012 before transferring to the West End in 2013. Capturing more imaginations than just those of London audiences, the show also won five Tony Awards for its subsequent Broadway run and has even found a place on the GCSE English Literature syllabus.

The production won a staggering seven Olivier Awards in 2013, making it the most successful play in Olivier Award history. Speaking about the innovative adaptation, which features the show’s now iconic grid set by designer Bunny Christie, Haddon commented: “When I wrote Curious Incident I was absolutely convinced that it couldn’t be adapted for film or stage. The novel is one person’s very insulated and sometimes profoundly mistaken view of the world. We’re stuck inside Christopher’s head from cover to cover… I simply couldn’t imagine how Christopher’s story could be told with any integrity in this way. Simon’s genius was to recognise that I was completely and utterly wrong.”
