On Thursday 21 June, the longest day of the year, Monty Python’s Spamalot is holding a special ‘midKnight matinee’ (which, despite the pun, starts at 23:30) in aid of The Theatrical Guild.
What’s more, in honour of the show’s cast and 5,877 fans recently breaking the record for the world’s largest coconut orchestra, everyone who attends the midKnight matinee will receive a limited edition Spamalot coconut-scented air freshener.
Established in 1892, The Theatrical Guild assists those who work in all areas of the theatre – backstage, front of house, on stage, technical and support services – who are unable to manage due to ill health. All proceeds from this special performance of Monty Python’s Spamalot will go to the charity.
Monty Python’s Spamalot is based on – or lovingly ripped off from – the Python film Monty Python And The Holy Grail. Written by Python Eric Idle and his musical collaborator John Du Prez, the stage show follows King Arthur’s search for the Holy Grail, aided by a bunch of hapless knights on coconut-hoofed steeds. It features characters from the film including the Knights of Ni, the Lady of the Lake, flatulent Frenchmen and God (aka John Cleese). The score combines songs from the film plus new material and a song nicked from another Python film – Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.
The current cast includes Simon Russell Beale as King Arthur, plus Laurence Olivier Award nominees Hannah Waddingham (the Lady of the Lake) and Tom Goodman-Hill (Sir Lancelot.).
