Philip Madoc is to lead the cast as First Voice in Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood, which plays at the Tricycle from 12 to 24 May (press night 14 May).

Malcolm Taylor directs the cast, which also comprises Howell Evans, Cerith Flinn, Abi Harris, Jennifer Hill, Gareth Kennerley, Glyn Pritchard and Anne Rutter, with David Jason lending his voice to the Guidebook.

Madoc is an experienced stage actor with regional theatre credits at the Salisbury Playhouse, Manchester Royal Exchange, Ludlow Festival Theatre and Theatr Clwyd. He also appeared in The Blue Angel and The Old Devils for the Royal Shakespeare Company. On television he has been seen in Here Comes The Queen, A Very British Coup, Fortunes Of War and The Life And Times Of Lloyd George.

Welsh poet Thomas’s ‘play for voices’, Under Milk Wood, was originally intended for radio but has been frequently performed in the theatre since its 1953 premiere in New York a few months before the author’s death. Funny, bawdy, sad and sensual, it captures 24 hours in the lives of the inhabitants of Llareggub, an imaginary, small seaside town in South Wales.

To coincide with the production’s run at the Tricycle, a special event is being held on Sunday 11 May at 19:30 in which the poet’s daughter, Aeronwy Thomas, will talk to director Taylor about her famous father.
