Carrie: The Musical arrives in London

Published 13 February 2015

Following much anticipation, Carrie: The Musical has confirmed its London premiere, arriving just in time for prom season with a run at the Southwark Playhouse from 1 May.

Start praying for your salvation as Carrie and her blood-soaked Senior Prom take over the London Bridge venue from 1 to 30 May, 27 years after the musical was first seen at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s home in Stratford-upon-Avon, from where it transferred straight to Broadway.

Based on Stephen King’s cult novel, which was subsequently made into one of the 20th century’s best loved horror films, the musical tells the story of 17-year-old misfit Carrie White who is harbouring a burning secret… one that reveals itself on the night of Senior Prom with gory consequences.

Michael Gore (composer), Dean Pitchford (lyrics) and Lawrence D. Cohen’s (librettist) cult musical was reworked and re-imagined by the original trio in 2012 for its Off-Broadway award-winning revival production.

The London premiere of this new version of the bloody, supernatural hit will be directed by Gary Lloyd, the creative brain behind West End’s Thriller Live! and regional hits 20th Century Boy and Aspects Of Love.

Audiences brave enough to head to the Southwark Playhouse this summer to discover who is crowned Prom Queen will be treated to many of the show’s infectious original numbers including Open Your Heart and The Destruction, alongside a line-up of new songs from its 21st century revamp including Stay Here Instead and Once You See.

Casting is still to be announced.
