Cannibal! The Musical, adapted form the film by Trey Parker, the co-creator of cult cartoon South Park, will bring its unique blend of comedy, tunes and questionable eating habits to the Leicester Square theatre from 27 July to 11 September.
Billed as “The only and best cannibalistic cowboy musical on the planet”, the comedy will open at the Leicester Square theatre in July and play through to September.
Based on a true story, Cannibal! The Musical tells the tale of the only American ever to be convicted of cannibalism, Alferd ‘Alfred’ Packer. As he faces a judge and jury, Packer recounts his 1873 journey across the Colorado Territory leading a hapless group in search of gold. When they lost their way and starvation set in, they had a tough choice to make.
Originally made by Parker as a film in 1996, while he was studying at the University of Colorado, Cannibal! The Musical’s blood and ballads were brought to the stage in an off-Broadway production in 2001. The Rival Theatre Company production which comes to London this summer was first seen at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival.
Since filming Cannibal! The Musical, Parker has found fame as the co-creator of the Emmy Award-winning animation South Park. He also received an Oscar nomination for the music to the cartoon’s 1999 feature film South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut.
Surprisingly, Cannibal! The Musical will not be the only tale of controversial canapés in the capital this year. Victoria’s Above The Stag theatre opens Silence! The Musical, the unauthorised musical parody of Oscar-winning film The Silence Of The Lambs, later this month.
