The collaboration between artist Antony Gormley and choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet has won Best New Dance Production.

Staged at Sadler’s Wells in May 2010, Babel (Words) was the final instalment of a triptych of Cherkaoui/Jalet works that also includes FOI and Myth. It reunites Cherkaoui with sculptor Gormley who previously worked with the choreographer on Zero Degrees and Sutra.

Cherkaoui and Jalet blended contemporary dance with movement styles from around the world in Babel (Words), which explored the ideas of language and space being the driving forces behind all human interaction.

In a category in which Sadler’s Wells had the monopoly on nominees, Babel (Words) beat stiff competition from Danza Contemporanea De Cuba’s Mambo 3XX1 and previous winner Matthew Bourne for his Cinderella.
