Actress Hayley Atwell is the latest cast member to be confirmed for the 2009 revival of Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge, joining the previously announced Ken Stott and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.
Atwell will play the niece of Stott’s Eddie Carbone, a dockworker in 1950s Brooklyn who takes in his wife’s illegal immigrant Italian cousins, unaware of the devastating effect this will have on his life.
Atwell is a young actress with a swiftly rising profile, having recently appeared in films including The Duchess and Brideshead Revisited, and in television dramas The Shadow In The North, The Ruby In The Smoke and Mansfield Park. On stage, she appeared at the National Theatre earlier this year, taking the title role in Major Barbara alongside theatrical heavyweights Simon Russell Beale and Clare Higgins.
Stott, star of TV dramas including Messiah and Rebus, was recently seen in the West End comedy God Of Carnage, while Mastrantonio, who plays his wife Beatrice, was last on the London stage in 2004, appearing in the Donmar Warehouse’s Laurence Olivier Award-winning production of Grand Hotel. Mastrantonio is probably best known in the UK for her film work, which includes The Perfect Storm and Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.
Atwell, Stott and Mastrantonio are directed in A View From The Bridge by Lindsay Posner, whose production of Carousel opens at the Savoy theatre in December.
A View From The Bridge, which opens at the Duke Of York’s theatre in February, follows current Pinter production No Man’s Land and a short run of solo show Mandy Patinkin: In Concert.
