The Hampstead theatre’s forthcoming production of Howard Brenton’s #aiww: The Arrest Of Ai Weiwei will be streamed live on the internet following its world premiere next week.
Taking place on 19 April, the free live-streaming will allow theatre fans worldwide to watch Brenton’s tale about Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and his 81 day imprisonment following his arrest in 2011.
Talking about the live-stream, the artist himself said: “I am delighted that #aiww: The Arrest of Ai Weiwei will be live-streamed to the world. It will bring the play’s themes of art and society, freedom of speech and openness, the individual and the state to a new, broad and receptive global audience.”
Based on information gathered through Barnaby Martin’s conversations with the artist and directed by James Macdonald, the production’s cast includes Christopher Goh, Junix Inocian, Andrew Koji, Orion Lee, David Lee-Jones, Andrew Leung, Richard Rees and David Tse.
The live-steaming is available to watch on the Hampstead theatre’s website and YouTube channel, and viewers are encourage to get involved on Twitter and Facebook using #aiwwlivestream.
#aiww: The Arrest of Ai Weiwei will open at the Hampstead theatre on 17 April, with previews from tonight, and will play until 18 May.
