London’s long-running rock musical We Will Rock You sees legendary band Queen join forces with writer Ben Elton to bring its unmistakable sound to Theatreland.

In the Queen song-fest We Will Rock You, the action takes place in a futuristic world, the iPlanet, where rock music is banned. Globalisation is complete; everywhere the kids watch the same movies, wear the same fashions and think the same thoughts. Individuality is unthinkable… unless you are a rebel, a Bohemian, who lives in the underbelly and resists the sterile world above. The Bohemians believe instruments still exist somewhere on iPlanet, they just need a hero to find them. Is Galileo that man?

We Will Rock You has a score which features many of Queen’s greatest hits including Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio GaGa and the title track.

British rock band Queen – Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon – was formed in 1971 and released its first album two years later. Staying at the top of the music industry for two decades, Queen’s reign was cut short when lead singer Mercury died with AIDS in 1991.

Writer Elton became best known early in his career as a stand up comedian, but also wrote for successful BBC sitcoms The Young Ones and Blackadder. He has a number of novels and plays to his names, but moved towards musical theatre in 2000, collaborating with Andrew Lloyd Webber on The Beautiful Game. It was after this experience that he wrote We Will Rock You, which he followed with Rod Stewart musical Tonight’s The Night.

We Will Rock You is choreographed by Arlene Phillips, who has worked on many West End shows, but became best known as one of the judges on the hit BBC1 celebrity dance show Strictly Come Dancing.

We Will Rock You is currently in its 11th happy year at the Dominon theatre.
