Peter Shaffer’s iconic play, telling of the rise of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is revived by director Michael Longhurst at the National Theatre.

When a young, if rowdy, prodigy arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world, Antonio Salieri is torn between promoting his genius – and destroying it. Awestruck but jealous, Salieri wages an obsessive war on Mozart, music, and ultimately God.

The iconic play first premiered at the National Theatre in 1979, winning multiple Olivier and Tony Awards, before being adapted into an Academy Award-winning film.

In this new production directed by Longhurst, Lucian Msamati plays Salieri, with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia.
