Following his one-week appearance in Madness musical Our House, Suggs will return to the Cambridge theatre from next week for a five-week run in the show.
The musical, which won the Hilton Award for Best New Musical at the 2003 Olivier Awards, is based on the songs of Madness, including the hits Baggy Trousers, It Must Be Love, House Of Fun, and My Girl. Written by Tim Firth, the plot revolves around a young lad Joe (Michael Jibson) who commits a petty crime; he has the choice of two paths – to give himself up to the police or make a run for it – and the musical follows both. Madness ringleader Suggs will play the ghost of Joe's father, currently played by ex-Eastender Ian Reddington, who attempts to direct his sometimes wayward son onto the right path.
"I've been very involved since the beginning, spending a lot of time at the show, " Suggs has commented. "I've always loved what Ian has done with the role, and he's always joked with me that it could have been written for me. That started me thinking each time I sat through the show, what would it be like in the part? So I finally thought I would give it a go. Roll on next year's Oliviers!"
Suggs will be in Our House from 7 April to 10 May.
