The first images have today been released of Imelda Staunton and Conleth Hill in the forthcoming West End revival of Edward Albee’s Tony Award-winning play Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?.
London’s 2017 theatregoers will be excited to see the four-time Olivier Award winning Imelda, whose star turn as Mama Rose in Gypsy last year received critical acclaim, star alongside fellow Olivier winner Conleth, who may be best known to audiences for his role as Lord Varys in the HBO series Game Of Thrones.
For a play about an initially charming, but subversively sinister, couple, whose strained marriage is explosively scrutinised when a young couple go back to their home for after-party drinks, photographer Charlie Gray’s initial pictures capture the two looking surprisingly welcoming – until his latter, quite terrifying, images unveil them very much as characters George and Martha.
Announced last week, news of the revival comes shortly after the multi-Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee’s sad passing.
The show will play at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 22 February 2017 for 13 weeks only and, on the basis of this evidence, should prove not only an exciting revival of a famously celebrated play, but also a fitting tribute to the revered writer’s theatrical legacy.
