Video: Tea break with the cast of Closer

“It’s like our bloody beating hearts are laid out in front of you for your entertainment and delectation.”

Such is Closer star Oliver Chris’ pithy description of Patrick Marber’s modern classic which is currently being revived at the Donmar Warehouse.

“It’s a no-holds-barred emotional gore-fest.”

There’s really no doubt about exactly how unflinching Marber’s portrayal of modern love, relationships and sex is, is there?

It’s a bleak day. The rain is pouring down outside. Umbrellas sit dripping in the corner of the room and Marber’s play seems unlikely to add cheer to the situation. Yet with a cup of tea and the infectious personalities of Rachel Redford and co-star Chris the room takes on a glow and warmth.

Chris and Redford star in the production, directed by David Leveaux, alongside Nancy Carroll and Rufus Sewell as the four individuals whose love lives intertwine as partners are flipped and swapped.

What better way for them to warm up for an emotionally draining, spiritually exposing Thursday matinee, than discussing the shock value of the play, possible playwright cameos and dropping the c-bomb with us.
