The most respected ceremony in London theatre’s awards season, the Laurence Olivier Awards, will return to its previous home the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Sunday 13 March for the glittering 2011 awards.
The event will include a star-filled red carpet welcome to kick off the evening. When the awards have all been given out, a post-awards gala party will be held at the glamorous Waldorf Hilton.
The prestigious awards began in 1976 as The Society of West End Theatre Awards, becoming the Laurence Olivier Awards in 1984. Over the past 34 years the ceremony has taken place in numerous locations, including many London theatres such as the National Theatre Olivier, the Lyceum theatre, Victoria Palace and the London Palladium, and other glamorous venues including The Park Lane Hilton and Café Royal.
For the first time, the 2010 awards were broadcast live exclusively on Official London Theatre. There was also a brand new award, the Audience Award For Most Popular Show, which was voted for by over 55,000 Official London Theatre users. The ceremony was arguably the starriest yet, with Jude Law, Gillian Anderson, James Earl Jones, Mark Rylance, Imelda Staunton, Melanie Chisholm, Patina Miller, Tony Sheldon, Maureen Lipman and Kim Cattrall all in attendance.
